The New Museum seeks a Director of Communications to play a critical role in shaping and expanding public awareness as well as enhancing the museum’s profile and visibility. This role conceives of and executes communications and audience development strategies and collaborates closely with staff across departments to develop and implement innovative press and marketing strategies for exhibitions, public programs, institutional initiatives, publications, partnerships, and events including the annual Spring Gala. The position reports to the Deputy Director and works closely with the Director, Artistic Director, Chief Advancement Officer and PR Consultant. Direct reports include a Communications Assistant.
Responsibilities:
Management
•Oversee hiring, training, supervising, and providing support to team members of the Department of External Affairs in partnership with the Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy.
•Manage and work collaboratively with the Communications Assistant.
•Maintain relationship with PR Consultant and collaborate on major institutional strategies
•Oversee major press previews for the exhibition program.
•Oversee and work collaboratively with the Marketing team to cross promote and share resources
•Strategize and support management of media partnerships and sponsorships for exhibitions and initiatives
Communications
•Develop (often in close consultation with PR Consultant) and pitch story ideas for exhibition programming, public programming, initiatives and events resulting in articles in art & culture and general publications; local, national and international media; print and online
•Develop overall press plans, steer the institutional schedule for announcements and press releases, and work closely with Department Heads and editors to write, gain approvals and distribute releases
•Advise and help conceive and implement press campaigns for New Museum initiatives NEW INC and New Museum affiliate, Rhizome
•Cultivate relationships with key members of the media and regularly update and maintain list of 8,500+ international writers, journalists, social media and cultural influencers
•Work with Director’s office on drafting institutional quotes and responses as well as on all institutional announcements such as major gifts and programmatic announcements
•Manage and schedule all interview requests for Director, Senior Leadership, and Curators
•Maintain interdepartmental systems for media contact lists, tracking and responding to press requests in a timely fashion, distribution of images, reporting and archiving of press clippings, maintaining internal comms website, and archiving of photography, etc.
Marketing
•Serve as one of the key leaders of the museum’s digital strategy efforts
•Provide big picture support on strategy including advertising, marketing and social media
•Provide big picture support on marketing of exhibitions and new initiatives
•Sign off on key public facing materials which include and not limited to marketing emails, press announcements and relevant social media postings
Documentation and Film Shoots
•Oversee all photographic documentation of exhibitions, public programs, special projects, openings & events, architecture, staff, and institutional initiatives
•Oversee all photography, film shoots, maintain institutional guidelines, and best practices set by Director of Security, Head of Exhibition Design, Curatorial team, and Registrars
Reporting
•Edit and oversee quarterly Press & Social Media Report for Board of Trustees
•Issue a regular Press & social media to Senior Leadership
•Keep New Museum Leadership informed on all breaking news and relevant trend articles
