Kathleen Lynch - Director of Operations, Art Production Fund

In this episode of Frank Talks, we chat with Kathleen Lynch – Director of Operations, Art Production Fund. Art Production Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to commissioning and producing ambitious public art projects, reaching new audiences and expanding awareness through contemporary art. Kathleen joined the Art Production Fund team in 2012 as Project Manager. In her time at Art Production Fund, Kathleen has developed an expertise in assisting artists in production from the early planning stages to the realization of public artworks. Previously, Kathleen worked for Galerie Jocelyn Wolff in Paris. Kathleen graduated from Rutgers University in 2010 with a Bachelor of the Arts in both Art History and French. Kathleen is a member of the Performa Visionaries. In 2017, Kathleen participated as a guest lecturer at Parsons School of Design. We admire Kathleen’s dedication and perseverance to the non-profit sector of the art world and we are excited to share her Frank Talk here.

What is the best piece of advice you can give about working in the art world?

Get out there and see as much art as possible! Go to every opening, studio visit, installation… see it all. Follow all of the major museums, galleries, and arts organizations on Instagram so you can keep up with programming. Not only is it important to be aware of what’s out there, but it’s also an opportunity to forge new relationships.

What is something you encounter often with employees that tests your patience?

Tardiness and lack of follow-through. It’s so important to take full ownership over a task and see it through from beginning to end.

What does a good employee do?

Art Production Fund is a small organization, so our team is involved in every aspect of running a non-profit. From meeting with corporate sponsors and hosting board meetings, to obtaining permits and painting walls at installations… we do it all! A good employee for us is someone who sees no task as too small and is always keeping their eyes open for opportunities to contribute.

What makes a person hirable?

Someone who has a positive attitude, is a creative problem solver, and most of all has a killer work ethic!

What is the most frowned upon trait for an employee?

Complaining!

What are things a person can do to make them stand out in the workplace?

Someone who is polite, hardworking, and knowledgeable on contemporary art will always stand out to me!

What are things you can do to proactively boost your CV?

Reach out to your favorite art organizations and see if there are volunteer opportunities. It’s a great way to learn, and a positive encounter could turn into a job prospect.

What does professional mean to you?

Someone who is consistently polite, respectful, and positive.

Are there any tips you can give people entering the workforce?

Don’t be afraid to reach out and introduce yourself to people you admire. When I was in college studying art history I cold-emailed Art Production Fund to find out about internship opportunities. I literally knew no one in the art world at this time. Casey Fremont immediately responded with a kind email and an offer to come in for an interview. Ten years later and I am now the Director of Operations!

Are there any tips you can give for increasing your online presence? Whether with your LinkedIn, Art Frankly or other accounts?

Be authentic. There’s no need to try to emulate everyone else and a unique perspective is so refreshing! Also, be aware that everyone is watching…
